Gustavo Barbosa, aka Coach Gus, is a Strength & Nutrition Coach at Fitness Playground Newtown – and an aspiring actor and comedian.
Gus has a strong passion and purpose for making a difference in people’s lives through fitness. He can also support you with behaviour change and nutrition coaching; he uses these components for a holistic health approach that helps his clients perform inside and outside the gym.
He strives to go above and beyond to tailor your coaching and guarantee you’ll feel supported and enjoy every part of your journey. Whether your goal is weight loss or getting strong, Gus will bring the best of his energy to make sure you succeed while having a good time.

My goal is to make your journey as enjoyable as possible – this is why I use the “Deep Health” approach, which I learnt through my training with Precision Nutrition. I strongly believe that, unless you’re an athlete focusing purely on performance, you don’t need to live for fitness to be healthy and achieve your goals. You can be 1% better every day without depriving yourself of food, a night out with friends, or a holiday with your kids. It’s possible to make sustainable habits through small daily actions and gradually changing behaviours.

3 fun facts
- I used to be an amateur dancer, although I never became famous. I still have the videos on YouTube.
- I rode horses when I was a kid.
- I was an accountant back in Brazil. When I came to Australia I worked in countless different jobs. The coolest one was building the X Games stage in 2018.

“I have been training with Gus since October 2021. I had initially chatted to Gus about increasing my upper body strength, toning up and just generally getting more comfortable in the gym. I’m pleased to say since training with Gus, not only has my strength and tone improved, so has my endurance and stamina.
The upper body strength has come in handy on some of the day hikes I did over summer and supported me in working from home at my desk for hours during COVID, immensely improving an upper back issue I previously had to see a physio for during lockdown.
