Pilates has become a go-to workout for building lean muscle, improving posture, and enhancing overall body awareness. Its low-impact approach makes it accessible for almost anyone, yet it delivers a challenging strength workout that can boost athletic performance and make daily movements feel easier. But when you step into a studio, you’re often met with a choice: Reformer Pilates or Mat Pilates? While both share the same foundational principles, they offer unique experiences and benefits.

To help clear up the differences, we caught up with an expert to get her opinion. Jessie Dyer is a Pilates Master Trainer and Wellness Coordinator at One Playground. With a professional background in dance, Jessie brings a deep appreciation of movement, alignment, and body awareness into every class she teaches. She teaches both Mat and Reformer Pilates, championing the unique benefits each modality offers. Jessie empowers her members to feel stronger, more capable, and more connected to their bodies within a supportive and upbeat environment.

Here’s her take on Reformer Pilates vs Mat Pilates.

What is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall body awareness, mobility and stability. Performed on a mat using body weight and props for resistance, it incorporates controlled movements, precise breathing, and concentration to build stability and alignment throughout the body.

Mat Pilates explores the true foundations of the Pilates practice, brought to life with a dynamic, contemporary flair. Our Mat classes are full-body, non-stop, seamlessly flowing sessions that incorporate layered, challenging movements, engaging the entire body to its fullest potential. Mat Pilates helps improve overall body awareness, mobility and stability, all while remaining low-impact and accessible for every level.

Mat Pilates is incredibly versatile; it can be a gentle introduction for beginners or a demanding workout for seasoned athletes looking to cross-train. Progression happens naturally as you gain strength and control, allowing you to move into more advanced variations of exercises at your own pace. The best part is that it’s all low-impact and accessible for every fitness level.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a specialised bed with a sliding carriage, springs, and straps to create guided resistance. This setup strengthens and mobilises the body through fuller ranges of motion, with tension that can be dialled up or down for any level. The “guided resistance” feels incredibly supportive. Unlike lifting a free weight, the springs provide constant tension through the entire movement, which helps you maintain control and proper form.

This controlled load is especially effective at correcting natural imbalances developed through day-to-day life, like hunching over a desk or always carrying a bag on one shoulder. The Reformer helps restore symmetry, balance, and functional strength. A class might include footwork to align the legs and pelvis, long box exercises to strengthen the back, or standing lunges on the carriage to challenge your stability.

Classes are slow-paced and controlled, progressing gradually toward more advanced, peak movements once the body is warm, primed and integrated. This deliberate pace is key; it builds deep muscular control and ensures every movement is precise. Instructors can easily scale the workout for different goals, whether you want to build pure strength, improve stability, or even get in some cardio conditioning with more dynamic movements. Because the Reformer supports your body, it’s exceptionally safe for your joints, making it a fantastic option for rehabilitation and injury prevention.

Reformer Pilates vs Mat Pilates: How They Compare

Both Mat and Reformer Pilates will help you build strength, stability, and body awareness while improving posture, flexibility, and overall movement quality. They are low-impact, full-body workouts that focus on controlled, intentional movement, making them accessible for all levels. The core principles of centring, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow are present in both.

The main differences between Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates come down to tempo, equipment, and focus.

1. Tempo and Energy

Mat Pilates classes are often faster-moving and flowing, with a high-energy vibe driven by music. Reformer Pilates classes tend to be slower and more controlled, emphasising precision and deep muscle activation.

2. Equipment

Mat requires minimal equipment, just you and the mat, with the optional addition of small props. The Reformer is a sophisticated piece of equipment that provides external resistance and feedback.

3. Focus

Mat Pilates emphasises mobility, deep core engagement, and exploring your body’s natural limits. It’s about learning to control your own body weight. Reformer Pilates uses guided resistance to help correct daily imbalances and can be tailored for very specific goals, from building targeted strength to rehabilitating an injury.

Which Pilates Format is Right for You?

Ever wonder what it feels like to really move your body, to feel it working in ways you didn’t expect? That’s Mat Pilates, moving to the music with big, flowing movements that get your whole body working, leaving you buzzing and helping you tune in with your body.

Now imagine a workout where every movement is guided, slow, and precise, and suddenly you’re feeling muscles you didn’t even know you had. That’s Reformer Pilates, a slow burn that builds strength, awareness, and brings symmetry to your body.

Why choose? Consider your goals and preferences! Most members find the best results come from mixing both, so you get the energy of Mat and the deep activation of Reformer.
